Sapphire blades are used in shakers and microtomes to significantly improve section quality compared to conventional blades, especially in fluorescent labeling, radioautography, immunohistochemistry and electrophysiology applications. The blades are made of synthetic single crystal sapphire and are capable of producing distortion-free sections down to 10 microns thick. Sapphire blades provide a cleaner cut and smoother surface, helping to maintain the viability and integrity of surface cells and making it easier to track small labeling elements.

Uncoated sapphire windows are suitable for high temperature, high pressure, high vacuum, corrosive and other harsh environments. Sapphire has high compressive strength and is resistant to strong acids and corrosion.
