Polychromy is a special body-colour effect possessed by certain transparent-semitransparent coloured gemstones, whereby the gem material appears in different colours or shades when viewed from different directions. For example, sapphire crystals are blue-green in the direction of their column extension and blue in the direction of vertical extension.
Cordierite, for example, is extremely polychromatic, with a blue-violet-blue body colour in the raw stone. Turning the cordierite around and looking at it with the naked eye, one can see at least two contrasting shades of colour: dark blue and greyish-brown.
Coloured gemstones include ruby, sapphire, emerald, aquamarine, tanzanite, tourmaline, etc. It is a general term for all coloured gemstones except jadeite jade. By some definitions, diamonds are actually a type of gemstone, but coloured gemstones usually refer to other precious coloured gemstones in addition to diamonds, with rubies and sapphires leading the way.
